Jane Sassaman describes “Willow,” which was named after her daughter, as a “totally optimistic quilt.” It was inspired by a 17th century embroidered Elizabethan jacket, which Jane found reproduced in a book. In the jacket she found a delightful combination of elegance and wit, filled with all kinds of flowers that excited her. With further investigation she discovered a treasure trove of historical “millefleurs” (literally “a thousand flowers”) works; they have a refreshing quality of innocence and opulence. The spiralling willow tree and leaves are reminiscent of the tree of life, a many-branched tree illustrating the idea that Piece and Quiet all life on earth is interconnected. Whimsical butterflies, dragonflies and centipedes abound in this secret garden cradling the hopes for our children’s future. Sassaman is a contemporary quilt artist, fabric designer, author and teacher whose critically acclaimed quilts are known for their bold designs, celebrating the energy and miraculous beauty of garden flowers and plants. It has been named as one of “The Twentieth Century’s 100 Best American Quilts”.
