Nautical Stars

A compass rose, sometimes called a windrose, is a figure on a map or nautical chart used to display the orientation of the cardinal directions - north, south, east and west.  Ancient cartographers would design the most elaborate compass roses to decorate their maps so that mariners of old could navigate the oceans using charts and stars to explore unknown realms.

peace & Quiet

This stunning quilt has an incredible painted quality about it.  Inspired by a photograph, this woodland scene took six months of painstaking work to create, mostly working at night when her small children were in bed.

Therese Quilt

Therese May is a university-trained fine artist who began making quilts in the late 1960’s.  She is known for her embellished and painted quilts, using private symbols and figures which emphasize spontaneity and passion rather than control and precision.

Willow

Jane Sassaman describes “Willow,” which was named after her daughter, as a “totally optimistic quilt.”  It was inspired by a 17th century embroidered Elizabethan jacket, which Jane found reproduced in a book.
