This stunning quilt has an incredible painted quality about it. Inspired by a photograph, this woodland scene took six months of painstaking work to create, mostly working at night when her small children were in bed. It has approximately 8,000 individual sewn pattern pieces which recreate the depth and perspective of the original landscape using uncanny skills in fabric and color choice. There are two animals hidden somewhere in this quilt, a deer and a wolf. Cynthia England is a graphic designer who developed a technique she calls “picture piecing”. It combines aspects of painting, stained glass and needlework; dividing the complete image into smaller pieces that can all be sewn using straight seams, thus allowing her to include intricate details and shading. The quilt is machine pieced, however, some of the trees and rocks in the foreground were pieced and then appliquéd on. Cotton fabrics were used primarily, with organzas and satins used mainly in the water. It has been named as one of “The Twentieth Century’s 100 Best American Quilts”
